What Are Composition Shingles?

In Santa Rosa, composition shingles are still the most common shingle in use — and we think the more you know about what’s going on your roof, the better the decision you’ll make.

Composition shingles are the most common roof covering in the country, found on the large majority of homes here and nationally. They’re also called asphalt shingles, after the material they’re made from. A few basics worth knowing:

• Each shingle has a strip with notches cut at even spaces, creating the look of three separate shingles once it’s installed properly.
• Architectural or dimensional shingles are a higher grade with thicker construction. They cast shadow lines that give the roof a richer, more textured appearance.
• They’re coated with a layer of granules that protect the shingle from the elements — resisting fungus growth, standing up to California sun, and adding the colour.
